A whole year of assessments, courses and tests.
We passed our panel and was approved for our guests.
With a handful of characters, The 3 years has passed quick.
2 years of those with ‘Sweetheart’ playing her tricks!
Sweetheart is now 10 and been in care since 8,
Placed with my family after a sort of blind date.
We first met sweetheart in McDonald in her town,
Where she greeted us smiling whilst swinging her gown.
Her social worker had arranged contact to meet,
Somewhere relaxed and comfortable – where we could eat.
We sat for a few hours and talked away.
Sweetheart asking when she could visit then come and stay?
Just a few days later she brought her case,
The emotions she was feeling evident on her face.
We showed sweetheart her bedroom then let her roam,
The next day this was the house she would forever call home.
A Friday in August sweetheart moved in.
Two years I’ve hid my headache with a grin.
Sweetheart was diagnosed with ADHD,
Giving not much opportunity for even a peaceful pee.
Shes up at 6 and doesn’t sleep till 8,
For 14 hours a day we repeat no, stop and wait.
Like any other child of a similar age,
She is sweet but demanded with a teenagers rage.
We manage her behaviour like a child of our own,
Accounting for her history which is a little unknown.
Fostering is full-time, 24 hours a day.
It’s more than a job, despite the obvious pay.
You provide a family, a home and love,
Plus support and guidance better than the god above.
Aside of the care there’s a lot of work,
Daily reports and ELearning which isn’t a perk.
Visits from social workers taking up a lot of your week,
Requiring dedication and someone not afraid to speak.
Aside of the challenge, care work is rewarding too.
Filling a gap in our lives we previously never knew.
Sweetheart adds youth and a childhood charm,
Being without her now would be similar to the loss of an arm.
Providing an older sibling to my younger son,
Teaching him daily about how to have fun.
Fostering is a commitment and tiring too,
But worth every minute when they say “I love you!”
